The vinery in the winds
The most ancient and comprehensive testimony for viticulture in Ancient Greece is found in the work of Theophrastus, “Peri phytōn historia” (“Inquiry into Plants”). One of the points he made about the cultivation of vineyards is that “…in mountainous regions and places exposed to the wind… the plants of the vine should not grow vertically but according to the direction of the wind, in order for them not to brake or grow unnaturally…”
