Dragons and Bees
Map of Italia Antiqua
Looking up above the doorway, one can see two papal coats of arms. The first, a golden dragon with a red backdrop, is the long-standing family symbol of the family of Pope Gregory XIII. Did you notice, though, that there is something missing? The Pope’s dragon has no tail as this was considered to be an evil symbol. Underneath we find the coat of arms of Urban VIII, adorned with three bees. This Pope also left his personal imprint on the maps of the gallery. He decided to embellish each map with gold compasses and calligraphic writing. So, if your eyes are trained, you can see little bees in practically every map!
