History in a ceiling
Map of Italia Antiqua
The ceiling is filled with gilded stucco decorations and about a hundred scenes and allegories; it actually forms an anthology of significant moments from the lives of saints that occurred here in Italy. Each event is depicted above the region it took place. Looking above the map of Italy, one sees the baptism of Emperor Constantine by Pope Sylvester I after defeating his rival Maxentius by virtue of the cross. This pictorial is actually aimed to manifest the importance of Divine Providence throughout the regions of Italy.
