Martyrs of Gorkum
The Liberation of Vienna by Jan Sobieski
The paintings in this room came here as a result of Pius IX’s desire to collect pieces for his “Gallery of the Saints and the Blessed.” To the right of the colossal scene of King Sobieski and the exit doorway, one can admire the artwork “The Martyrs of Gorkum” by Roman artist Cesare Fracassini. Painting with incredible speed and vividness, he depicted the martyrdom of 19 Catholic clerics and friars hanged by Calvinists Protestants in 1572 in Holland. The reason? They had not renounced Transubstantiation, the Christian doctrine which claims that during the Eucharistic meal, the bread and wine offered to the subjects, are actually transformed into the Body and Blood of Christ. Although it is rejected by reformed theologies such as Calvinism, the belief in Transubstantiation is central in the Catholic Church.
