A Poem Carved in the Marble
Piazza del Duomo
It is easy to get lost in the contemplation of one of the largest Cathedrals in the world. Commissioned by Galeazzo Visconti, Duke of Milan in 1386, the ambition to make a powerful Duchy made him choose for Gothic style unrelated to the Italian tradition and the consequent call to the city of a crowd of foreign artist. Impossible to pass alongside and not to look up. It is a matter of light: depending on the intensity, the marble takes on different shades and its statuesque apparatus is extraordinary and incredibly scenographic, epic for its abundance (3,400 statues), like Mark Twain said "A vision! A miracle! A poem Carved in the marble."
