The ‘Adamantios Korais’ Public Library
In the Volissian edition of the Iliad, in the prologue of the 1st rhapsody, Adamantios Korais stresses the fact that, of the seven cities claiming the provenance of Homer, Chios alone tended to the edition of the poet’s work. The so-called ‘Chios edition’ of the Homeric epics was so illustrious that it was included in the catalogue of the Library of Alexandria, which was established in the Hellenistic period and was the richest library of the known world at the time. According to research, the ‘Chios edition’ was made possible through the expenditure of the city of Chios, and according to tradition, it was destined to be recited during celebrations and for educational purposes.
