The Museum
The Byzantine Museum of Chios
The museum is housed in the renovated ottoman Mecidiye mosque, built in the mid-19th century by sultan Abdul Mecid. The permanent exhibition is centered around everyday life, as well as secular and religious art and architecture on the island, from the Early Christian period through the 18th century, in an effort to highlight the presence of various communities that coexisted on the island throughout the centuries (Orthodox, Catholic, Ottoman, Jewish). The building’s vestibule presents a copy of Eugène Delacroix’s painting, “The Massacre at Chios”. This copy was created by the painter Evangelos Ioannidis during 1917-20, commissioned by Georgios Papandreou who was the governor of Chios at the time. The Museum is open every day except for Tuesdays, from 8.30 a.m. to 4 p.m., with an admission fee at 4 Euros during summer months and 2 Euros during winter.
