Sirens and Ithaca
Modern sculpture-Xylas pedestrian
The second sculpture, referred to the 14th Rhapsody of the Odyssey and lines 250-255, is entitled ‘Winged Words-Nike’, and is created by sculptor Thanos Karonis. The lines describe how Ulysses has left Scheria, the island of the Phaeacians, to find his homeland, Ithaca. He meets goddess Athena who announces that he has finally reached his destination. In order to make sure that she is telling him the truth, the ingenious hero starts talking and describing the beauties of another island. Mario Tapia from Ecuador has created the sculpture ‘Siren’, inspired by the 13th Rhapsody, which describes how Ulysses was saved from the Sirens and their deadly singing.
