The final residence
The tomb of Psycharis
In 1925, Yiannis Psycharis visited Chios in order to find the right spot for his final resting place. The Bella Vista site – at the southern entrance to the city, where lies today the statue of general Plastiras – was an ideal location because, as says its name, it offered a beautiful view towards the coast of Asia Minor. However, Psycharis’s wish was not granted. When sculptor Konstantinos Dimitriadis visited Chios in 1931 to create the monumental tomb at the site suggested by Psycharis, that was no longer possible. A local, Stefanos Papalas, finally donated his plot which was close to Daskalopetra, with an enchanting view of the sea and the coast of Asia Minor, so that the tomb of Psycharis could be built.
