Psycharis, Chios and Homer
The tomb of Psycharis
Although drawing his descent from Chios, Psycharis did not visit the island early in his life. His first visit took place in 1886, and it was determinative, as Chios became a source of inspiration for his work ‘My Journey’ which was the first book written in the demotic language. Through this original recounting of his travels, Psycharis talks about local language and each village’s dialect, which comes alive in his pages. About Pyrgi, he writes that there is no greater school for a linguist. He also mentions that, hearing the locals in various villages, he felt like he saw and heard Homer standing before him.
