Marble spool-shaped pyxis
Marble spool-shaped pyxis
Pyxides were used as containers for the safekeeping of small personal effects, possibly jewellery or cosmetics. In the Early Cycladic period, they were originally made of clay (and possibly of wood), but were soon copied in marble. In addition to the spool shaped variant, biconical and globular pyxides, with or without foot, were produced.
