The Parthenon is the most splendid monument of the city-state of Athens. It was built to honour Athena, the patron goddess of Athens. Construction began in 448/47 BC and the Parthenon was inaugurated in 438 BC at the Great Panathenaea. The sculptural decoration was completed in 433/2 BC. The Parthenon’s architects were Ictinus and Callicrates, while Pheidias was in charge of the sculptural decoration.
