Questionable quality

Looking at the material of EYDAP’s Historical Archive, we find information concerning the worker’s nutrition and its quality that was commented by part of the press of the time. More specifically, the workers paid 20 drachmas a day for their food, while their salary was meager. They were paid 64 drachmas. They received an oka (1282 grams) of freshly baked bread and once day meat, usually lamb or goat and less often beef, pork, or fish. In addition, they consumed plenty of vegetables, rice, spaghetti, bulgur, peas, and seasonal fruits, as well as plenty of olive oil. The highly paid staff was paying from 30 to 50 drachmas daily but was receiving better food in terms of quantity and quality. As for the American workers of the site, they were enthusiastic about retsina and Greek wine in general – which was not accidental, as this was the Prohibition era in their homeland (1920-1933). However, in July of 1929, the press of the time reported complaints about the poor quality and small portions of the workers’ food, as well as about watery and tasteless drinks.
