Before the expansion of toy factories, toys were made by Greek craftsmen and sold mainly at festivals held to celebrate saints’ days ( called panigiri in greek), as well as in small shops owned by the craftsmen themselves, in grocery or general commerce stores which they themselves supplied. A new category of manufacturers was also created, the ‘’panigirades’’, who made the toys a few days before the feasts. The ‘’panigirades’’ were craftsmen of handmade toys fabricated from various materials, such as clay, tin, plaster, fabric, in a variety of colors and designs and were mainly wandering. These toys included mainly dolls, trumpets, yo-yos, tin butterflies, balls, noisemakers, magic cups that were unspillable, and clay juglets that once filled with water were transformed into whistles that imitated the nightingale's sound. Also, many toys, made of clay and plaster and modeled in the shape of animals were created by potters from Asia Minor, Aegina, and Chios. Gradually, the toys were gender-specific with boys playing with soldiers, weapons, cars, and musical instruments and girls playing with dollhouses and wooden mini replicas of furniture. In most of the cases, the family income was not sufficient, so getting a new toy was a luxury.
