Battles in the stadium
The stadium
The stadium, built of native poor soil, was full of stones and dips where water collected when it rained. Old wooden pieces nailed on the ground served as goalposts. The ball was handmade, made of pieces of leather, cloth, and laces. Many children played barefoot on this rough soil and got hurt very often. Bruises, scratches, and bulges were on the daily program. Many times, the arguments turned into quarrels which in turn ended into stone war, torn clothes, and injured heads. The stadium was a place to be since children from the nearby villages were coming in, even though they had to walk a quiet distance in order to get there. The kids have also formed teams. The team of the dam played against the team of Boyati and the match was sometimes ambiguous. But, there also were pleasant events and surprises especially when a mom of one of the kids brought fresh homemade lemonade or a grandfather bought candies for all the children.
