The “Little ‘Paris”
The house B5 of the settlement
Since the beginning, the settlement had electricity and water. The fresh high-quality water was coming from the springs located in Stamata, a region 2.5 km away from the settlement. Water got to every house, WC, baths, and workplace. At the same time, the residences in the Attica region were not supplied with water, a project that was realized after 1933. Concerning the construction of the sewer sanitary system, the Americans shared their knowledge and expertise. Roy Gausmann, the chief engineer of the dam, cited in his monograph “Water for Athens’’ that the settlement, completed in 1929, had a very good sewer sanitary system and was equipped with bath and toilets, while in Athens the system was completed in the early 1980s. If inhabitants wanted to get in contact with persons outside the settlement, there was a telephone at their disposal. Even though telephones were not installed in every house, the one, located to the office of the supervisor called Roumanis. All the facilities mentioned above made the inhabitants call their settlement “Little Paris”, even though the majority of them had never left their country or even Attica!
