Protecting the workers
The hospital
The company collaborated with the Rockefeller Foundation since Greece was a member of the anti-malaria program conducted by the Foundation. The Marathon district was characterized as a high-risk area and therefore the control of the disease’s spread was one of the immediate goals of the company, aiming to ensure the health of its employees. For that purpose, freshwater was transported by pipelines from the Stamata area in order to cover the needs of the dam workers, the use of quinine became mandatory, the appropriate clothing was imposed and screen windows were placed on the workers’ houses. As soon as Marathon lake was completed, Ulen & Company would stock it with a certain small fish species, known as "anti-malarial", which fed on mosquito larvae. Finally, a small hospital was set up at the worksite, in order to receive and treat sick workers.
