The diamond and gold road
The De Botton building
From the late 18th century, it is recorded the presence of the guild of goldsmiths, the so-called koïmtzides in Thessaloniki. Until 1917, when conditions changed due to the fire, the goldsmith workshops were very small and housed in a small street, west of Venizelou Street, which no longer exists. One of the most important goldsmiths in the city was Aaron Mallah. His sons, Jacob and Samuel wanted to expand the family business. In 1923 they bought a central piece of land at the corner of 26, Venizelou Str. and 18, Vasileos Irakleiou Str., in order to construct an offices and shop building, where they housed their goldsmithery business. Another jeweler was Moses Asseo, who owned a store on Vassileos Irakleiou Str., close to the Mallah. A year before the German Occupation, Sam Beresi opened a jewelry store at 23, Ionos Dragoumi Str., close to the previous jewelers. The concentration of these stores also led to the opening of small workshops manufacturing luxury boxes for jewelry and watches.
