The destroyed synagogue
The Modiano Market
The Modiano Market was partially built over the old central synagogue, the Talmud Torah. The Talmud Torah was built in the middle of the 16th century. Following repeated destructions and reconstructions, and without suffering irreparable damage during the fire of 1917, it was demolished due to the new urban plan. It spread across 4 acres and in addition to the synagogue it hosted a school, an asylum, a bakery for the ‘azyma’ (un-kneaded bread) and other buildings of the Jewish community, as well as six more synagogues. The Hébrard plan, named after the urban plan proposed by architect and archaeologist Ernest Hébrard for the city center after the great fire, abolished the existing road plan and the synagogue and its surrounding building complex were therefore demolished.
