Trefoil-mouth jug
Trefoil-mouth jug
Vases decorated with concentric circles (painted with the use of a multiple brush) were the hallmark of Cypriot pottery in early historical times. This jug on bear motifs painted in added white, which place it in the variety of Bichrome Red Ware. Vases of this type were widely distributed across Cyprus and beyond, probably because of their luxurious appearance or because of their precious content (wine? perfumes?). Similar jugs, either Cypriot imports or local imitations, dating to the 8th and 7th c. BC, have been found at various sites in the Eastern Mediterranean, from Cilicia and northern Syria to Rhodes and Crete. Their wide dissemination offers incontestable proof to Cyprus’s extensive trading relations with other Mediterranean regions in the Archaic period.
