Pheidias’ block
Pheidias’ Block (the Frieze)
On the west frieze, a block depicting a single horse and its rider may be found. It is block eight (VIII), sculpted by Pheidias himself. Indeed, the sculpture is believed to depict Theseus, founder of the Panathenaea, trying to restrain his runaway mount. The great detail of the sculpture, the intricate folds and the particularly realistic rendition of the figure all bear witness to the mastery of the artist.
