In 1685, the Venetians turned their attention to Athens and began talks with the Turks. These were concluded in 1687, with an agreement that 40,000 reals would be paid annually by the Turks in order to keep the campaign from taking place. However, the Athenians sided with the Venetians and promised to contribute to a campaign against the Turks. Thus, the Venetians set off for Athens.
