The birthday of Athena
The west frieze
The Parthenon frieze is a continuous strip of low-relief sculptures adorning the upper part of the temple’s cella. It consists of 115 blocks and is 160 meters long and 1.02 meters high. A total of 378 human figures and deities and 200 animals, mainly horses, are depicted. The frieze does not depict a mythological subject but the Great Panathenaea, Athens’ greatest festival in honour of the goddess Athena. The festival took place every four years and lasted twelve days. It consisted of rites, sacrifices, athletic and musical contests. The festival culminated on the day when according to tradition the goddess was born, the 28th of the month Hekatombaion (July-August). A grand procession accompanied the new peplos (robe) for the statue of Athena to her temple on the Acropolis.
