The high point
The east frieze
The procession on the frieze began on the west side of the Parthenon and was divided into two branches running along the north and south sides. The leaders of the procession converge towards the gods on the east side. The twelve immortals are seated in two groups facing the approaching branches. In the centre of the east frieze, on a block that is almost four times larger than the normal, a bearded man folds a large piece of cloth with the help of a young male assistant; to their left are two young girls who bring stools and a taller, older woman. This is the high point of the ceremony, when the chief religious magistrate of Athens, the archon basileus, prepares the new peplon (robe) for the statue of Athena Polias (whose statue was actually housed in the Erechtheion and not the Parthenon).
