Volax is one of the oldest villages of Tinos and owes its name to these eerie granite boulders (known as volakes) that litter the surrounding countryside. Volax is built on a plateau and is mentioned for the first time in a Venetian document dated to 1618. The villagers weaved baskets to earn their living, a tradition for which they are still famous today. As you walk through the alleys of the village to the small stone open-air theater just outside Volax you will come across many dilapidated houses where the front doors are covered with verses of famous Greek poets.
