Birthplace of sculptors
Ysternia
Some people claim that Ysternia got its name from the numerous cisterns that existed in the area or because it was the last village connected to the island’s main road. But if there is no agreement on the origin of the name, everyone agrees that Ysternia is rightly considered the birthplace of master sculptors. The brothers Georgios and Lazaros Fitalis, who are considered the fathers of modern Greek sculpture, were born here. So did Lazaros Sochos, who went on to enjoy a brilliant career in Paris, Antonios Sochos who held exhibitions all over the world, and the internationally acclaimed Lazaros Lameras.
