The Venetian tower
Pyrgos
Pyrgos is the largest village of Tinos and, according to period documents, owes its name to a 16th-century Venetian tower. The village enjoyed great prosperity in the 18th and 19th centuries as a result of the systematic exploitation of the local marble and the establishment of the first marble workshops. Tinos joined the Greek War of Independence when Georgios Palamaris raised the revolutionary flag in the central square of Pyrgos in 1821. The whitewashed stone houses with the decorated lintels, the marble fountains, and the cobblestone alleys contributed to the recognition of Pyrgos as a traditional settlement.
