Where muses resided
The Valley of the Muses
Votive columns, inscriptions, pedestals, and fragments of statues unfurl the memory of what used to happen in this place, which, according to myth, was home to the nine Muses: Clio, Euterpe, Thalia, Melpomene, Terpsichore, Erato, Polymnia, Urania, and Calliope. In this flowery plain where the wind whispers melodies from the choruses of birds, the Museia were held every five years in antiquity. Artists from all over Greece would come in the 3rd century B.C, to compete in guitar, flute, trumpet, epic and satirical poetry, rhapsodies, acting, and tragedy, while the tripods commemorating their victories that stood in the sanctuary of the valley proclaimed their reputation to the edges of the world.
