The Thessalian city of women
Acropolis of ancient Proerna
The antique city of Proerna is first recorded and mentioned by Strabo. It was located between the city of Thavmaco and Pharsalos. The excavations revealed traces and artifacts dated from prehistoric to Roman times. From the late 6th century B.C, the worship of female deities was dominated, as it is attested by the presence of the sanctuary of Demeter Proerni. During the 5th century B.C. the city was fortified for the first time.
