In the village of Stavros (once known as Demerli) a three-aisled post-Byzantine basilica of the 18th century houses the icon of Panagia Demerliotissa, which, according to tradition, was crafted by Luke the Evangelist. According to the dedicatory inscription, the church was built in 1778 and decorated with frescoes eight years later by students of Dionysios of Fourna who wrote one of the most important manuals of iconography and byzantine art.
