The Varlaam Monastery
Meteora
In the 14th century the ascetic Varlaam first built the chapel of the Three Hierarchs and some cells on the hill where the monastery now stands. He was followed in 1518 by two brothers from Epirus, Nektarios and Theophanes, who contributed greatly to the majestic image visitors see today. The second large monastery of Meteora, with its tiered courtyard and singular view, has a hospital, a chapel of St Anargyri, a church dedicated to All Saints, a guesthouse, an old cookhouse, and other auxiliary spaces.
