The merrymakers’ train
Loutraki
Interest in the railway connection of Athens with Loutraki dates to 1891, when the Piraeus, Athens and Peloponnese Railways company (SPAP) requested the concession of the town’s thermal springs from the Greek government. The company envisioned the construction of a therapeutic spa that would be accessible with a branch line of the Piraeus–Corinth railway line. Unfortunately, the construction costs were too high, so SPAP opted to deliver passengers by rail to the Isthmus of Corinth. From there, horse-drawn carriages brought them to Loutraki. The construction of the casino by the Venizelos government prompted SPAP to launch the famous “merrymakers’ trains” with its luxurious railway cars for the casino players. A branch line with tracks on the beach opened in 1953. The following year the company redirected the line through the town and opened the current station building.
