The old steam locomotive
Kalavryta
For many decades, the rack railway was the only motorized form of transportation in the area. The early trains (two in each direction per day) took 2.5 hours to reach their destination. Today the journey takes 85 minutes. The railway station of Kalavryta opened in 1896 and was rebuilt following an earthquake in 1955. The Kalavryta Museum Railway Showroom hosts the locomotive DK 8001. It was constructed in Paris in 1891 and is still operational, provided you supply it with 200 kilos of coal and four tons of water. For safety reasons, since the passenger cars lack automatic breaks, the locomotive pushes them uphill from Diakopto. And since there is no turntable to reverse the steam engine, the train departs for Diakopto in reverse.
