Thermal springs
Kyllini
The railway station of Loutra Kyllinis was built for a single reason: to bring visitors to the hotels and the thermal springs exploited by the Piraeus, Athens and Peloponnese Railways (SPAP) company. In the early 1890s, SPAP secured the right to use the thermal springs near the settlement of Linzi (as the area was known) to increase their revenue and prestige. Within a short time, the company's engineers drained the swamps, removed the resident lepers, and built a grand hotel and a spa. The hotel became famous for its luxury and comfort, while the spa facilities were equal to the best in Europe. The settlement had houses for employees and poor patients, a church, a theatre, a small casino, coffee shops, and restaurants. Eventually, the railway company lost interest in the enterprise. The spa installations fell into disrepair, and the railway line was abandoned in 1969.
