Nafplio
The arrival of the railway to Nafplio was the result of Prime Minister Charilaos Trikoupis’ vision to stimulate the internal growth of Greece. The contract for its construction was signed in 1882, and the line opened in December 1885. The railway station of Nafplio was built on Areos Square, created by the Ottomans in 1720 and adorned with beautiful gardens and kiosks. The neoclassical station building has a carved track-side platform canopy to shield the passengers from the elements. The first train carried local members of parliament and managers of the construction company, but the reception was subdued as a result of inclement weather. It took seven hours for the train to cover the distance from Corinth, but travel time was gradually reduced to three hours. Until 1963, when the station started serving only freight trains, this was a meeting point for the people of Nafplio. It was also wildly popular among children who played in the surrounding area. Today the main station building accommodates cultural institutions, while a steam locomotive serves as an outdoor exhibit.
