The Pelion train
Lechonia
Ano Lechonia was the main junction of the Mount Pelion rail network that connected the villages to the port of Volos. The triumphant arrival of a train full of dignitaries signalled the inauguration of the line on October 12, 1895. The mental collapse of Charles Coustenoble, director of the Thessaly Railways, caused significant delays in the completion of the project. The hapless Belgian soon died of starvation at a French clinic. In the meantime, the engineers who faced the formidable task of building a railway on mountainous terrain that lacked roads used the beaches to land the necessary construction materials. The catastrophic Volos earthquake of April 1955 destroyed the original station building. Its replacement was immortalized as “Kryovrisi” in the Finos Film production “The Teacher with Blonde Hair”. This only ground building was demolished in the 1980s to make way for a replica of the original station.
