Field resistance
Didymoteicho
Didymoteicho railway station opened in 1873. The facilities include the main ticket sales office, an elongated warehouse, a small canteen, and the two-storey residence of the stationmaster across the street. Most of the buildings have a brick frame with an external cladding of wood. This was the favourite method of the French engineers across Evros. On August 29, 1944, the railway station became a battlefield between ELAS and the German occupying forces. The previous night, guerrillas surrounded Didymoteicho and called on the Germans to surrender. The latter tried to bring reinforcements by train from Nea Orestiada, but a battle broke out in the morning. The Germans lost thirty men, while many escaped to Turkey by swimming across the river Evros.
