Originally a fish market and now the pulsating heart of the city, Dam Square was named after the dam upon which it was built. It is surrounded by several shops and significant institutions such as Madame Tussauds-Amsterdam Wax Museum and the Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky, founded in 1858. This is a site with many stories to tell, most of which are turbulent and bloody, such as the 1535 Anabaptists’ revolt, which led to the brutal execution of the surviving instigators and the Silver fleet revolt that took place less than a century later. This turbulent event occurred in 1628, following the capture of the Spanish treasure fleet by the legendary Dutch admiral Piet Hein, whose heroic feat led to the injection of about 15 million guilders into the Dutch economy over a night! In the 60s and 70s, the square became the place of protestation against the Vietnam War.
