From Prehistory with Love
Rokin
Rokin is much more than a busy street with well-known boutiques, restaurants, hotels, and historic buildings. Located between Dam square and Munt square, Rokin is also a canal, part of the river Amstel, whose large part wart between Dam square and Spui square was filled in 1936. The first mention of Ruck-in, as it was once called, dates back to the 16th century and is associated with the transformation of the buildings that were located on both sides of the river for the construction of the dock. During the construction of the metro station, the archaeologists examined the riverbed and found remains and artefacts dating from the prehistoric times until the contemporary era. The findings revealed that along the river between 2700 and 2000 BC was home to a seasonal settlement, which bears witness to the fact that the area around Rokin and Amsterdam river has been inhabited even not on a permanent basis.
