S is for Sun
Puerta del Sol
“Sol” began as a door, not a square. It gave access to the medieval city of Madrid; the Gate is orientated towards the East, where the Sun is born anew. Many streets - ten to this day- converge on Puerta del Sol, which from the 15th century began to take shape as a crossroads. Hence, the square was traditionally used by the authorities for the delivery of official proclamations to the citizens. During the reforms of the Enlightenment, in the middle of the 18th-century, the French architect, Jacques Marquet began the construction of the central building with the clock, the Royal House of the Post Office. Today this is home to the headquarters of the Presidency of the Community of Madrid, while, during Franco’s dictatorship, the basement of the building hosted the dungeons of the General Directory of Security, a dark institution that repressed any attempt of revolt and desire for freedom.
