America's favorite building
Empire State Building
The Empire State Building takes its name from the official nickname of the State of New York, known as the Empire State. Its 102 floors (which make it 443 meters tall) were completed in 1931, and the skyscraper has enjoyed massive popularity ever since, and for good reason! It was the tallest building in New York's skyline before the World Trade Center was built; its distinct style is a leading example of the city's Art Deco era; its observatories allow visitors to enjoy a 360° view of the city; and of course, the famous spire at its top, which is regularly lit up for major events like the Pride parade or the Presidential elections. A 2007 poll by the American Institute of Architects found that it was America’s favorite building, and many people over the years have stated that it perfectly encapsulates the soul of the city and the United States in general.
