Aixa, the Free Woman
Cuarto Real de Santo Domingo
On January 2, 1492, Granada finally surrendered and Boabdil, the last Nasrid ruler, was forced to exile. Legend has it that on the road to Alpujarras mountains, he looked back to see Granada for the very last time and burst into tears. His mother Aixa told him: "weep like a woman for a kingdom that you could not defend as a man". Aixa was much more than Boabdil's mother. She was considered to be a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad and owned several palaces, including “Cuarto Real”. Aixa was politically active; She drew aside her son's rivals, handled negotiations and encouraged the people of Granada to hold strong. She acted like a true queen. For all this, she was known as al-Horra, the Free Woman.
