The River of Gold
Carrera del Darro
Along the street, visitors will discover the five bridges that cross the river, as well as various churches and palaces, a mix that makes a walk here truly endearing. Here we’ll find the 16th-century church of Santa Ana in Plaza Nueva. It is built on an old mosque, of which the minaret is preserved, though converted into a belfry. Darro River magically appears on the foot of the church running parallel to the road. Legend has it that it was a “River of Gold”: the current name Darro seems to derive from the Latin word aurus, which means “gold”. Interestingly, for centuries people searched for gold in its banks. In the 17th century, the street was widened and it was considered necessary to demolish the Islamic wall that existed on the right bank of the river. Yet, some of its gates still emerge from the vegetation in a way that evokes the romantic spirit of the past.
