Casa del Chapiz
Cuesta del Chapiz
The Chapiz House is a complex of different houses, orchards and gardens, all of them constructed over an old Nasrid palace of the 14th century. The properties belonged to two Moors in the 16th century, Lorenzo “El Chapiz”, who has given his name to the structure and his brother-in-law Hernán López “El Ferí”. They were moriscos, Muslims who had been converted to Christians, and despite their Muslim origins, they could still live in Granada. But that did not prevent the authorities from expropriating their property in 1571. This was a time of tension; the Moors had revolted as a reaction against the increasing pressure they felt from the authorities, but their revolt was repressed by Philip II and new tougher measures were introduced. The two properties were turned into residences for different families and at the beginning of the 20th century, they were restored to house the headquarters of the School of Arabic Studies, which are located here since 1932.
