When size matters
Xeste 4
Xeste 4 must have been among the largest buildings of the prehistoric town. Even in its present ruined state, it impresses the visitor with its huge size. It covers approximately 367 square meters (3950 square feet) and extends for a length of over 30 meters (98.4 feet). The ground slopes away to the east (to the right as you look towards the building), meaning that Xeste 4 probably had more than three storeys, with eighteen rooms on each floor. The building is constructed of finely cut blocks and must have served a public function. It stands on a conspicuous location and probably overlooked the entrance to one of Akrotiri’s two harbors. It was thus visible to all visitors as soon as the town came into view from the sea.
