Let there be light and fresh air
Xeste 2
Xeste 2 is an L-shaped three-storey building. Most of it remains unexcavated, except for the impressive north front. The wall is defined by the projecting zones of finely dressed square blocks of equal height. These mark externally the height of the floor of each storey. Xeste 2 also allows us to appreciate the beauty of the prehistoric windows that provided the residents with light and air despite the relative proximity of the houses in the urban core of Akrotiri. The original window frame was made of wood, which perished in the volcanic eruption. Nevertheless, its negative survived and enabled archaeologists to reconstruct it with concrete, a technique used wherever perishable material left an imprint in the layers of ash.
