When it rains, it pours
East house of Building Complex Delta
Torrential rains fell on the island of Santorini soon after the volcanic eruption that buried the town of Akrotiri. Streams carved new paths through the volcanic deposits, often reaching the pre-eruption ground level, while water mixed with mud and ash completely flooded the ruined ground-floor rooms. Any heavy pieces of furniture became trapped in this mixture, while lighter objects floated to the ceiling. At the same time, the flooding of the rooms preserved the overlying floors of the upper storeys in place. These events can be seen in the present condition of the East House of Building Complex Delta, whose walls rise behind the double horns. The Building Complex Delta occupies the central part of the town and consists of four adjoining houses. The East House is the smallest building uncovered, with an area of 192 square meters (2067 square feet).
