The ladies of Akrotiri
House of the Ladies
The House of the Ladies is a three-storey building with a total area of 483 square meters (5199 square feet). Once again, the stream that flowed through the settlement caused significant damage to the east wing of the building, but the west side survived in a better condition. A unique feature of the house is the central light well, which is a feature also present in the palace of Knossos in Crete. The ground floor and the first floor were used for storing foodstuff and vessels that were found neatly packed in chests of mud brick. The building, though, is justifiably famous for two frescoes that once adorned the top floor. The first composition depicts the Ladies and the other the Papyri.
