Domestic chores
West House
The West House got its name from its location in the town’s west sector. It is among the largest residences in Akrotiri (147 square meters / 1582 square feet) and overlooks a large open public space. The ground floor contained storage units and workshops in small but well-lit rooms. Many domestic tasks were performed here, possibly by servants, since there is enough room for up to ten working men and women. The stone grinding mills, the basins, and the crucible for the molding of silver objects indicate the range of domestic activities that took place here. The numerous cooking utensils that were found at the back of the house indicate the location of the kitchen. The food was prepared downstairs and carried to the lavish private quarters of the wealthy homeowner on the upper floor.
