The palace of Troy
Numismatic Museum of Athens
The Numismatic Museum is a coin lover’s paradise. The collection contains 600,000 objects (coins, medals, standard masses, dies, stamps) from the 14th century BC until modern times. Notable exhibits include spits of copper or bronze traded by weight (obols), the famous Athenian drachmas with the owl, gold coins of the Byzantine Empire, and the first coins of the modern Greek state. But even if coins leave you indifferent, you should stick around and explore the building. The “Iliou Melathron” (Palace of Troy) was built between 1878 and 1880 by the German architect Ernst Ziller for Heinrich Schliemann, the German amateur archaeologist who discovered Troy and Mycenae. The design was inspired by the Renaissance Revival Architecture’s lessons, while mosaics and murals depicting themes from the Trojan War, and Greek mottos adorn the interior.
